Bob Allison: In Memoriam

Detroit Public TV will honor the legacy of broadcaster Bob Allison (Allesee) on Monday, March 30 with the broadcast of Bob Allison: 50 Years of Ask Your Neighbor, a 2012 documentary marking Allison’s 50 years of broadcasting his daily radio show. The film follows Bob’s life and career; his success as one of Detroit’s most recognizable broadcasters, and – along with his wife Maggie Allesee – his service as one of our region’s most active philanthropists, supporting countless community institutions and charitable causes.

The film, produced by Todd Hastings, chart’s Bob’s life from his native Indiana to his adopted hometown of Detroit; first at WWJ Radio and later as the most popular host of Detroit’s “Bowling for Dollars” TV show, which aired at 7 p.m. weeknights, garnering a remarkable 50 percent share of all households watching television. The film covers Bob’s other pursuits in the worlds of music, athletics and business – pioneering radio the call-in program concept and providing a vision for innovation that is common in broadcasting today.
