Michigan’s largest conference on suicide — the Kevin’s Song 8th Annual Conference on Suicide: Continuing the Conversation, will stream Journey of Healing and Hope live on Detroit public television.
The focus of the program is on survivors of suicide. The stories of loss survivor, La Toya Bond and Scott Teichmer, an attempt survivor, will help to ease the pain for those who often suffer alone and in silence. Fr. Ron Rolheiser will share his belief that cries of the soul need neither to be saved nor be fixed – but rather they need to be heard. Barb Smith will address how to manage grief and offer hope to those who have suffered a loss and those who love and support them.

About the Conference

The Kevin’s Song 8th Annual Conference on Suicide: Continuing the Conversation, presented by The Dolores and Paul Lavins Foundation, The Children’s Foundation and the Joseph J. Laurencelle Memorial Foundation, and produced by Detroit Public Television.
The three-day conference brings together educators, mental health professionals, professional trainees and students, business and community leaders as well as members of the public, survivors of suicide loss, and attempt survivors. The speakers and presentations will address all aspects of this public health crisis in an effort to better understand and prevent suicide. The mission of the Kevin’s Song Conference on Suicide is to break down the barriers to build pathways to better models of prevention and treatment in order to save lives.

Survivor Saturday focuses on survivors of suicide loss and attempt survivors, support group facilitators, mental health professionals, and others interested in sharing and understanding the lived experience of surviving a suicide attempt/suicidal thoughts, and/or the loss and grief following the suicide of a loved one. Featured this year will be a compelling presentation from Kevin Berthia and Kevin Briggs.

In March of 2005, Kevin Berthia was going through a tough time. He couldn’t see any way forward, so he fell into a deep depression and decided to end his life at the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s where he met retired California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Briggs, who intervened and talked him down. These champions of suicide prevention and survival will inspire and be a source of hope and healing.

The day will conclude with a presentation about surviving the grief of suicide loss and facilitated support groups for attendees.

About the Conference

The Kevin’s Song 7th Annual Conference on Suicide: Building Roads to a Better Tomorrow, presented by The Dolores and Paul Lavins Foundation, The Children’s Foundation and the Joseph J. Laurencelle Memorial Foundation, and produced by Detroit Public Television — returns to an in-person format January 26 – 28, 2023 at the St. John’s Resort located at 44045 Five Mile Rd. in Plymouth.

Detroit Public Television is proud to partner with Kevin’s Song, a charitable organization dedicated to generating public awareness about the causes of suicide. From January 27 through January 29, Kevin’s Song is holding its 6th Annual Conference on Suicide.

Join us on Saturday, January 29, 2022 for a free livestream of that day’s program – Surviving Suicide: Erasing the StigmaThe program is a journey of hope and healing that is dedicated to survivors of suicide loss and attempt survivors. It also is intended for those who are interested in sharing and understanding the experience of surviving a suicide attempt and/or the loss and grief following the suicide of a loved one.

Presented by the Joseph J. Laurencelle Memorial Foundation, the program includes a panel discussion featuring four loss survivors who will discuss how they find themselves navigating their journey, sharing their personal experiences, and surviving the pain of suicide loss.

It will be moderated by Amelia Lehto, Crisis Text Line’s Manager and a specialist in crisis intervention and suicidology on the local, state, and national levels.

Surviving Suicide Loss: A Journey of Healing and Hope with Barb Smith – 1/23/21

In this 90-minute guided discussion as a part of the 2021 Kevin’s Song Conference, Barb Smith, Founder and Executive Director of the Barb Smith Suicide Resource & Response Network, talks with a panel of survivors of suicide loss. The panelists shared their stories, discussed dealing with loss at its various stages and provided information on various available resources.
